The attention of pharmaceutical industry officials in Korea was focused on the license out performance created by differentiated R&D strategy of JW. This is because JW Group recently received the “Licensing-Out Award” in the new drug development field at the 20th Korea New Drug Award (KNDA). On the same day, the outstanding researcher commendation continued, including producing winners. This award is of great meaning in that our group’s R&D competitiveness and licensing out performance were recognized externally, which was possible because we had a strong will to develop innovative new drugs (first-in-class). We invite you to the glorious awards ceremony.

Recognized externally for licensing out of innovative new drugs (first-in-class)

“The Licensing-Out Award of the 20th Korea New Drug Award (KNDA) belongs to JW Pharmaceutical.” A big applause burst out from all over when JW was called.

On the 28th of last month, JW Pharmaceutical won the Licensing-Out Award at the ‘The 20th Korea New Drug Award (KNDA)’ ceremony held at Samjeong Hotel in Gangnam-gu. At this ceremony, JW Pharmaceutical was recognized for the achievement of licensing-out agreement worth KRW 450 billion with LEO Pharma, a global leader in skin disease, through the development of an innovative atopic treatment ‘JW1601’ in August of last year. ‘JW1601’ is an oral drug that has a dual mechanism of action that simultaneously suppresses itching and inflammation by selectively acting on histamine H4 receptors, which is a new drug candidate that has been recognized for its enormous commercial value in the preclinical stage.

Mr. Park, the head of the Center, introduces the differentiated R&D achievements of the Group and the development process of JW1601, the treatment of atopic dermatitis, to attendees.

In particular, on the day, Chan-Hee Park, the head of the New Drug Research Center, served as a special speaker and presented the success stories of the new drug development and licensing out of our Group. Mr. Park introduced the competitiveness and excellence of our group through briefings on the current R&D status and pipelines of JW, and development process and research achievements of ‘JW1601’, attracting a favorable response from many people.

Dong-Yeon Kim, the chairman of the Korea Drug Research Association (KDRA), said with a happy smile, “I realized how much effort JW has put into creating today’s results.”

Meanwhile, the Korea New Drug Award (KNDA), which marks the 20th anniversary in this year, is the first and most prestigious new drug development-related award established in Korea, led by the private sector and sponsored by the government across all industries in Korea.

Awards for outstanding researchers were also held at the ceremony. In JW Pharmaceutical, Joo-Young Cha, the team lead of New Drug Team 3 and Do-Gyu Pyeon, the head of API Research Center, were selected as the winners.

Joo-Young Cha, the team lead of New Drug Team 3, was awarded the ‘15th Outstanding Researcher in New Drug Development’ in recognition of his contribution to the research and development of ‘JW1601’ and signing of a Licensing-out Agreement.

Team leader Cha played a pivotal role in overcoming the risk of discontinuing development due to toxicity issues during the nonclinical research process of ‘JW1601’ and completing the project successfully. As a result, last year, a large-scale licensing-out agreement with LEO Pharma was achieved under very unusual conditions as a candidate material in the nonclinical stage.

Do-Gyu Pyeon, the head of API Research Center, was awarded the ‘5th Outstanding Expert in Linking the Innovation and Commercialization of the Pharmaceutical Industry’ in recognition of his contribution to the successful development and commercialization of Ertapenem, a carbapenem antibiotic.

In January of last year, Mr. Pyeon, the head of the Center, made various efforts, including completing the submission of the drug master file (DMF) to the US FDA and conducting a simulated due diligence for FDA approval of Ertapenem. As a result, it received an Establishment Inspection Reports (EIR) from the FDA in October of last year, constructing a bridgehead for entry into global markets such as the United States and Canada.
